I’m curious. Oppo is pretty diverse, it would be interesting (to me at least, maybe no one else) to know what you consider acceptable gas mileage. I guess the second part of this question is how far away is your daily commute?
Are you willing to forgo some fuel economy in sake of a fun car? I’m not asking demographic and what people make, because everyone’s situation is different. Just curious what’s an acceptable tradeoff to you?
Personally, I pull down about 33MPG (2015 Civic) in mixed driving, and that’s good enough I guess. I’d like better, but I really can’t complain because I could have it a whole lot worse. I want sportier but am unwilling to compromise on the MPG. I guess I’m just getting old. Or I need a P85D.

I’m happy with anything over 20 in my IS300. Averaging 20.84 right now. Averaged 20.94 in my Celica. My wife uses her Enclave for short trips in town. Mileage is atrocious.

If I can hit at least 20 on the highway, that’s good enough for me. Sounds odd I know, but then again, I’m willing to give up fuel economy for other things.
As for my car, the best I can do on the highway is in the mid-20s, not great, but acceptable.

Given my location and the potential for snow fall in the winter I have to accept a lower MPG (or at least I think). I drive over a 100+ miles today and I’ve accepted my AWD’s avg of about 27MPG. I don’t think it’s too bad (especially since fuel is cheap, right now). I would love to have a 40MPG car, but not at the risk of not being able to get to work.
If I drive around 65-70MPH though I can achieve 29-30ish. (commuter car: ‘08 Impreza wagon).

With Primacy tires, my E46 was getting 27-28mpg. Now I see around 25mpg with the Pilot A/S3 tires. I would rather see closer to 30mpg because I’m driving 90 miles a day, and I’ve making a car payment in gas each month.

I wish I got better than the ~28 I get in my ‘08 Golf 2.5 on mostly highways, but I do like that it has never felt underpowered. I’m prepared to drop down to somewhere between 15-20 when I hopefully get a tacoma in the next few months.
I’d say below 25 would be unacceptable for a small commuter car, 22 for a midsize, 16 for a sports car, 15 for a small truck, and 10 for a full size truck.

I get about 21-22 for my commute in an 04 Mustang with a set of gears. Commute is about 45 miles daily. Next vehicle is a midsize or full size truck that can tow 7000 lbs and get 22-23 combined but not at the same time obviously.

Yeah, the AWD tradeoff is a PITA. One of the reasons I traded in my Crosstrek earlier this year. I loved the car, it just wasn't what I wanted for MPG. And the engine needed more oomph.

Mid-20s is good with me for a dd. I’ve only got a mile commute and it drops my mileage into low 20s, but my long highway trips on weekends are high 20s so it evens out. I used to have an 80 mile commute, and it was still fine.
My fun car, it doesn’t matter. My truck, I’d like to get better, may even drive it more if it did, but I only go through a tank or two per year anyway so it doesn’t really matter there either.

I drive with meh fuel economy in a car that’s not terribly fun because it’s comfortable and isn’t costing me anything. ~25mpg diesel, Benz with ~400k miles and generally a bit as the Brits would say “knackered”.

Years ago I had an S10 pickup that I was forever chasing vacuum leaks on. The best I ever got out of it was 9.8mpg. Yeah. That sucked. lol

I have three vehicles, and weirdly enough the fun-to-drive factor improves with the fuel mileage
94 Ford Ranger: 15 mpg - super slow
85 Toyota MR2: 30 mpg - buckets of fun, like a go kart
09 Buell Blast: 70 mpg - two whole buckets of fun

Ouch. That sucks. On the plus side at least the E46 is engaging to drive.
This is what surprised me most about my parking lot at work. There are a large number of big trucks and SUV's. And most of the people I know who have them never use them as a truck or carry more than two people. Seems like a huge waste of gas to me.

My Fusion gets on average 29-30 mpg and I think that is not enough for the amount of driving I do.
Remember in Canada gas is usually north of $3.75/us gal.
I’m spending ~$250/month just on gas. for a 1.6L 4cyl. If I drove an SUV or pickup I’d be spending north of $700!!! bucks per month.
I’m even considering the next gen prius because I’m tired of spending that much.

I get about 27.5 mpg in my FiST, which is fine for me - my previous ‘09 Accent hatch I only got 28.5mpg because I had to make up for the lack of power in that car, but even driving “normal” didn’t help much.
I was unhappy w/ the 20.3mpg my ‘09 WRX got. My BEST tank was 22.3mpg
If I could stay out of boost, I could do better with the FiST, but there’s no fun in that :D

My Subaru gets 20 to 25 mpg and my cobra gets 18 to 25mpg. The Subaru is not acceptable since it makes no power but its close to being replaced, my wifes Diamante gets way better mileage than the subaru its a shame.

it is. There is a guy in my office who commutes to work in an F350 dually!!! We work in an office on a computer. I asked him about it and his excuse is that every summer he takes 2 weeks off to go camping with his fifth wheel trailer.
So because you are to good to sleep in a small trailer you will sacrifice your wallet for the other 50 weeks out of the year? on top of that he still has to pay for the trailer too.
It would be way cheaper for him to spend $150 bucks a night on a decent hotel for those two weeks.

I honestly do not care because I knew what I was getting into when I bought my car. 12 mpg makes me happy. I usually get 21 on long trips. It helped a lot when I had a classic mini that got 40 mpg at least though...well at least helped justify it to myself. When I move in February I'll look to get an actual daily driver that isn't insane (thinking bmw 2002).

My commute is 30 miles round trip. It takes me about 2 and a half hours total (morning and night) so I average about 20 MPH.
For gas mileage? IDGAF. My 6 wagon got about 16, FiST gets 28, GTI gets 25.

Sadly, anything over 15 mpg seems really good to me.
My daily drivers (old F-150, Roush Mustang) usually average around that. Once in a while I’ll hop in my Miata, get 30 mpg, and reconsider all my vehicular decisions in life.

Like I said...cruise control, if I want to get on it the MPGs go down real fast. And I also drive on the Garden State Parkway in South Jersey...not much in the way of elevation changes. But overall I’m pretty impressed with the fuel economy.

I really only use my car in winter and for long trips. What I would put up with depends on how much I like the car. My current car averages around 25 mpg, but I could see settling for 10-15 on a classic Lincoln or Cadillac.

My old car (2000 Audi A6 Quattro 4.2) got 18-21 on the interstate, 22-25 on back highways at 60-65mph, and like 13mpg max in city. It was worth it to me though. And most of my driving is highway.
Now I have aa 2003 BMW 325ii and I average about 26mpg.

Yeah, it’s a balancing act. I’ve been down the same road before, and felt the Civic was the best compromise I could come up with. I looked into the C-Max or the Prius, but just couldn’t pull the trigger.

Given the fact that gasoline has dropped to €1.50/L ($6.10/gallon US) here today my tolerance for gas guzzling is limited. Had my daily driver (‘00 Peugeot 406 coupe) not had an LPG conversion it would’ve been burning through 8L/100km of gasoline (29.4 mpg US), which at my yearly kilometerage would be utterly unacceptable.
Luckily I do have that LPG conversion, so I can fill it up for the comically low price of €0.55/L ($2.25 a gallon), while having to accept a 10-15% or so dip in fuel economy compared to gasoline.
Added bonus is that I don’t use my DD for commuting, I’ve got a company
snooze fest
car for that.

I was looking into upgrading my car to the Crosstrek, but then I saw the HP. I’m going to hold for a bit. I think it was 140HP and heavier than my 170HP Impreza. I couldn’t bare to lose anymore speed.

Too much hassle. It does run a little better with B20, probably because of higher lubricity or something, but if I ran straight veggie I’d choke up the intake even faster and finish trashing the seals in the distributor pump.

The Kia averages about 28-30 MPG on our 36-mile-each-way commute. I run about 75-80 mph with no cruise control and I drive it hard because Charlotte traffic is stupid — especially around Harris Blvd where my wife works. I have to make four U-turns every day to get from home to her work to my work and back again.

It really depends on the vehicle.
On a big 26’ moving truck, I’d like to have a diesel one that gets at least 10mpg.
And if it’s an ultra high performance exotic car, I view 10mpg as the minimum acceptable mileage.
And for a small, cheap, gasoline-powered FWD daily driver, I’d like to average at least 30mpg. And if I spent the extra money on a diesel, then I’d like to see at least 40mpg.
And if I spent money on a BEV, 80 MPGe should be the minimum attainable mileage.

The thing is as much as an enthusiast that I am. A daily driver for me has one job to get me to and from work and the other random outings. I don’t really care about the dynamics since I’m just sitting on the freeway with the cruise on. A 400hp car would change absolutely nothing to the thrill of my commute it would only hurt my wallet more.
I’d rather have something that is super reliable and cheap to run so I can use that money for the weekend “fun” car.
I’ve tried getting one car to do it all DD/weekend warrior and it was horrible. sitting on the freeway by myself at 65mph while getting 16mpg is fucking pointless.

My commute is all of 8 miles, but my gym is about 20 miles away so that’s where I burn most of my gas.
I’m fine averaging a solid 12 in the Blazer (regular gas), 18 in the Camaro, and 40+ on the bike (both premium).

My GTO on the highway gets upper 20s, and it won’t crack 30... In the city it gets around 17-19. A mix of both city and highway gets me around 24 and 430 miles to a tank. In the SS it is lower, because it does primarily city driving and it is auto.

15mpg around town and 20ish is good enough for me in my beater Grand Cherokee. It was $500 nearly 3 years ago so it’s cheap enough for me not to care about the gas mileage. My stalled, 3.73’d z28 gets about the same around town and lower 20s on the highway. The stall really put a dent in the city mileage, but it’s long paid for and a blast to drive so I never cared much about the mileage either.

I had the CVT in mine, so it was the worst option really. If you fiddled with the paddle shifters and "downshifted" a couple of gears it wasn't so bad, but it certainly wasn't a fast car.

A hotel’s not “camping” though. The living space may be similar, but the view when you step out that door isn’t.
Canada seems like an expensive place to have a vehicle sit around that you don’t use often. I don’t know how far he has to commute, but the fuel savings from driving another vehicle may not even come close to covering the costs to buy, register, insure, and maintain a completely separate vehicle. I’ll use the American standard of driving 12,000 miles/year for a quick example. Say the F350 gets 15 mpg, not unreasonable for a diesel truck, and a “more acceptable” commuter that he would replace it with gets 25 mpg. So he’ll use an additional 320 gallons of fuel per year. Assuming gas is $2/gallon and diesel is $2.50, he’ll save $1,040 per year if he replaced the truck with a car.

I don’t commute by car, so I do few enough miles that fuel economy really isn’t worth worrying about, even at UK fuel prices. But the Camry’s pretty good anyway, what with being very light, and a proper, three-box, aerodynamic shape.

It really isn’t all that popular. Diesel vehicles have become the go-to vehicles to save on fuel costs.
Benefits: cleaner burn (engine oil doesn’t get dirty as fast), better emissions if I’m not mistaken, extra theoretical range as you can still drive on gasoline as well. My gasoline tank is still the stock size, and filled with gasoline. You just don’t want to due to the extra cost of the fuel. There are downsides as well though.

MPG isn’t a good metric. What really counts is cost per mile. For example:
‘94 Mazda B-3000 - 18 mpg - ave. $3.33/gal - $0.19/mile
I have to admit, I was surprised about this one. It looks like I picked up the app in 2012 when oil prices were high. I’d bet the story would be different if I dug up my old tracking notebook.
In comparison:
‘14 WRX - 19.3 mpg - ave. $2.90/gal. - $0.15/mile. This is with premium fuel.
The WRX is a lot more fun. It’s worth it. If gas prices go up again, I won’t be as happy, but given the cost of buying a new car, it’s not likely I will buy something more fuel efficient. It will be cheaper to run the WRX into the ground.
By the way, a friend of mine was looking for a hybrid car back in 2011. We ran the numbers. To justify the $10,000 price premium for a hybrid, gas prices would have to reach $12/gal.

As a european living in the US, I’m used to paying $9/gallon for fuel back home. So anything in double digits is fine by me.
My camaro seems to average about 26mpg, my ford escape 1.6 ecoboost however reports a pitiful 21mpg average.

I’m saying the camper probably cost $500+/month,the truck another $900, Add another 700+/month on fuel.
That’s over 25 grand (!!!) a year to go “glamping” 2 weeks a year.
What I’m saying is why not get a tent and a normal car if you really want to be camping? Or even a much smaller trailer that you could tow behind almost anything if you really need to have a trailer.

Depends on the vehicle I’m driving, I’ll adjust my driving to the vehicle. If I see a sudden, sharp drop in fuel economy, then that, to me, is unacceptable.
For example, I had a 2004 Mach 1 that got 25 on the highway in leisurely driving. When I later considered purchasing a nicely-modded 2003 Mach 1, it was lackluster in fuel economy - I struggled to get 20 mpg. That was unacceptable. My truck gets 16 mpg on the highway. If I see it drop to 9 mpg on the highway, something’s up, and I find that unacceptable.

Agreed! What’s even worse is that we weren’t factoring in 25 years of ownership. We were looking at the useful battery life. If you were going to keep it for 25 years, you would have to incorporate the cost of battery replacement every 6 years or so.

15 mile drive each way, stop and go for about 80% of the drive. About a 30-40 minute drive.
Stock LS1 Camaro SS 6 speed as my current daily. Id say around 15ish mpg. Im perfectly happy with the mix of performance vs mpg.

No. US gallons. There are no such things as Euro gallons. The Brits do use gallons occasionally, but I’m no Brit. I use the metric system. 6L/100km = 39.2 mpg US

i walk to work usually. but have to take a 200 mile round trip to a different office ~1x/week.. i aim for about 23mpgs on that trip. but then again its much better than i used to get in my now sold :( v12 jaguar. also, i get reimbursed for the travel expense, so doesn’t really matter to me. :)

My 90-some odd mile commute is 95% highway but about half is bumper to bumper traffic. When it is somewhat open I’ll drive like a maniac and when it’s bumper I’ll drive like a civilized person. So I’ve been getting about high 20s maybe 30 if I’m lucky for my average tank in a Mazda 6. Could be better though but I'm having too much fun to change.

The Miata was great in stock form (apart from being terrified by tailgating texters in large vehicles) but I’ve ruined any chance of comfort with suspension and seat modification.
The F150 is large and very bouncy, but I suppose its bench seat is somewhat comfortable.
The Mustang is terrible. Stiff suspension and stiffer clutch...feels like I’ve been doing squats on my left leg only after I get stuck in traffic. Only thing that makes it worth it is when I get to use the go pedal.
I think my love of vehicles has ruined any chance of owning something truly practical.

Same, as long as I get 20 highway I really don’t care. In “real” city driving as in bumper to bumper traffic with street lights and stop signs I only pull 13 mpg.

Yeah I guess British =/= Euro.
It’s the BBC Top Gear effect and them dissing American cars and saying stuff like “Well we already have 80mpg diesel cars...” and gloss over the fact that they’re using Imperial gallons.
And then people here hear that and say daft things like “well why does this get 80mpg in Europe but gets so much worse mileage in North America”

I’ve never owned a vehicle that got better than 25 mpg highway. I routinely get in the mid-teens for gas mileage daily driving my truck and now my Roadmaster wagon. The thing is, I don’t drive all that much. My wife and I both have very short commutes, and our families are all located fairly close to us. I drive 7-8k miles a year, and my wife only drives another 2-3k per year, so it’s just not a huge factor for us.
